Both the boys and girls THS Tennis Teams have worked their way up to the “Elite Eight” after they defeated Claxton with a 3-0 win on Monday at Trion’s courts. They will now move into the second round of the State playoffs.

The girls were victorious with a record of 5-0, and the boys finished them off with a record of 4-1. Singles players Samantha Hughes, Dixie Bethune, and Kaylee Jones, as well as doubles partners, Kristyn Martin and Maddie Jenkins, and Taylor Wesson and Autie Abernathy all had wins.  Boys’ singles players Callan Hamby, Bobby Jones, Isaac Thomas and Jonathan Chance, and doubles Payton Payne and Casey Tudor won their matches as well.

For playoffs, the girls’ tennis team will travel to South Georgia to play Baconton on Tuesday night; they will also play Wednesday at noon. The boys will host Miller County on Thursday at 1:00 p.m.

Coach Connie Gentry is confident that both teams will put forth their best efforts in attempts to advance another round.  “It has been years since Trion’s tennis team has been in the State playoffs, and this shows that our team has really worked diligently in achieving some goals they set early on in the season,” commented Gentry.  She added that she is very proud of their determination.

The teams first played Monday morning in the preliminary rounds. They randomly drew to see who they would play in pro-8 sets. The outcomes of the matches would determine the seeding for the tournament. The boys’ team defeated Woody Gap with a 4-1 score, earning them the first place spot, an automatic state qualification and a first round bye. The girl’s matches however were much more intense with a close 3-2 win, which placed them 4th, right in the middle of the pack.

The Trion tennis team has had some close matches in the last couple of weeks.  "It is not always easy to pull out wins when you have such a young team, according to Coach Howard Hughes".  Seasoned players Callan Hamby and Sam Hughes are working hard in that first seed spot this year.  "The competition is stiff and they both have a hard job each match," adds Hughes.  Other Seniors Maddie Jenkins and Kristyn Martin, girl's first doubles, are staying ahead of the game this season with only two losses.  Jonathan Chance and Isaac Thomas, boy's first doubles, have just teamed back up for the season and are finding their way to the winner's bracket.  Senior Bobby Jones has just returned after an injury and has given up a couple of wins in grueling tiebreakers.  The tennis team will travel to Dalton this week and after spring break they will face Chattooga at home and Gordon Lee and Model away.  The area playoff tournament will be on Monday, April 22, at Darlington beginning at nine a.m.  Good luck to the Trion tennis team.

The THS seniors of the 2013 season include Samantha Hughes, Kristyn Martin, Madison Jenkins, Jonathan Chance, Bobby Jones and Callan Hamby. The team played away at Centre Alabama Tuesday, March 19.
